1939 Obituary:809 Death Comes to Beloved Elderly Local Resident. Mrs. A. W. Klipfel, Sr., Passed Away Wednesday Afternoon — Funeral Friday. Mrs. Mary Delilah Klipfel, widow of A. W. Klipfel, one of this city's most highly esteemed elderly women, died at 3:30 Wednesday afternoon at the house of her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Fred A. Klipfel, Court Street, where she had made her home for several years. She was aged 84 years. Mrs. Klipfel was a native of the St. Johns community. She was born on Feb. 20, 1855, a daughter of Arthur and Margaret Baughman Bitler and spent her early years in that neighborhood. In 1874, she was united in marriage with Augustus William Klipfel of this city and they established their home here. For many years prior to taking up residence with her son, she resided at 202 E. Mechanic Street. Her husband was connected with the grocery business here for nearly 25 years before his death which occurred on April 14, 1919. Surviving are her son, Fred A. Klipfel, and five grandchildren including Miss Mary K. Klipfel, public librarian Mrs. Norman L. Brown, City Solicitor Arthur A. Klipfel Jr., and Augustus W. Klipfel, all of this city, and F. A. Klipfel Jr. of Los Angeles, California. There are also two half-sisters, Mrs. J. K. Werner of Mt. Joseph, Missouri, and Mrs. Eugene Burke, of Detroit, and a half-brother, Ira Bitler, residing in Florida. A son, A. A. Klipfel Sr. connected with local banking circles for many years, died about three years ago. Mrs. Klipfel was a faithful member of the First M. E. Church and was active as a member of the missionary society and other organizations. She was a member of the Irving Club, one of the oldest literary societies in the city and was honored as its eldest member.
