Following Mary Ryder's institutionalization about 1919, George relocated to California, accompanied by three of his adult children. By 1923, Otis Edward Phillips, Sr., his wife Helen Adele Cannady, and his mother Lucy Elizabeth Bay Phillips, had also relocated to Los Angeles, California.
