1861-62 Ohio 1st Volunteer Light Artillery Regiment:3, v. 10, p. 362. Three Years’ Service. This regiment was organized at Ravenna, Cincinnati, Camp Dennison, Cleveland, Columbus, and Camp Chase, Ohio, from August 6, 1861, to June 4, 1862, to serve three years. On the expiration of its term of service the original members (except veterans) were mustered out, and the organization composed of veterans and recruits retained in service. Battery M was consolidated with Battery I March 13, 1865. The organization was mustered out by Batteries at different dates, from June 15 to July 31, 1865, in accordance with orders from the War Department.

1862 Army of the United States Certificate of Disability for Discharge:180 Francis Kleipfel, Private of Captain F. Schultz' Company M of the 1st Ohio Regiment of United States Artillery, was enlisted by Capt. F. Schultz of the same Regiment of artillery at Freyburg, Ohio on the 5th day of September 1861, to serve three years; he was born in Bavaria, is forty five years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, common complexion, grey eyes, grey hair, and by occupation when enlisted a candle maker. During the last two months said soldier has been unfit for duty __ days. Station: Nashville, Tenn. Date: August 20th, 1862. I certify that I have carefully examined the said Francis Kleipfel of Captain F. Schultz' Company and find him incapable of performing the duties of a soldier because of: This man has had typhoid fever, which together with his age, has prostrated his system to an extent that he will be unable to endure hardships of the service.
