Notes for August William KLIPFEL

Family Remembrance:702 "Augustus Klipfel was a Civil War veteran. Augustus came west from Missouri with a small group of people after the Civil War and settled in Beulah, Colorado. In 1871, the first small one-room log structure school was built and Klipfel was on the school board. In 1882, he brought his wife and three children from Missouri. They settled first in the Couzzens Springs area and later moved into the valley. Augustus operated a sawmill up South Creek and was a primary supplier of lumber used in Beulah."

Autobiographical Sketch (1912 Pension Declaration):174 " . . .That his personal description at enlistment was as follows: height, 5 feet; complexion light; color of eyes gray; color of hair light; that his occupation was teamster; that he was born March 31, 1846 at Dayton, Ohio. That his several places of residence since leaving the service have been as follows: Auglaize Co., Ohio, 1865 to 68. Worth Co., Missouri, 1868 to 1879, Pueblo Co., Colorado, 1879 to 1912." Signed: August W. Klipfel, June 8, 1912.

Biographical Sketch (1997) from a Beulah Historical Society Newsletter, April 30, 1997:3009 "Among the very early settlers of Beulah was August W. Klipfel of Grant City, Missouri, a member of the 106 Ohio Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War. After the war, he encouraged a small group to come west with him in search of a home for his family. He camped in the upper area of South Creek about 8 miles above Beulah. He was determined to find work so he could bring his wife, Leah Thomas and three children (Edward, Mabel and Charles T.) from Missouri to the Beulah area to reside. Two children, William J. and Mary Anne, were buried in Missouri. In a short time, he did bring his family west in a covered wagon drawn by oxen. Charles T. Klipfel, a young lad of 6, well remembers the night of their arrival in Pueblo in 1882. A horse thief was hung on Pueblo's "Hanging Tree"! Later in 1882, they homesteaded on the Couzzen Springs Road on a location then known as the "Yuker Place". On this homestead the family suffered a frightening experience during corn planting season. Charles was helping his father when he was bitten on the heel by a rattlesnake. The closest doctor was in Beulah on Pine Drive at the present site of the W.K. Hurd home. A donkey was ridden to get help. While waiting for the doctor, Mrs. Klipfel caught chickens, split open their backs and wrapped them around the boy's ankle. Heat from their bodies drew out the poison. However, the scars remained with him always. The "Slattery Place" on South Creek was their first home in Beulah Valley; it is now the Occhiato home. August raised cattle, farmed and operated a sawmill. The family later moved farther down South Creek to the location now owned by Mrs. Beverly Klipfel. This home was destroyed by fire on a cold winter night. The children were ill with measles and had to be laid on blankets on the ground until they could be moved to their permanent home which was an old log schoolhouse moved from Pueblo Mountain Park from the Horseshoe Lodge Area. This was later known as "Uncle Francis' Cabin". Four children were born in Beulah, Francis I, Nellie, Mildred Elizabeth and Valentine J. (Vollie). Two children died in Beulah, Mabel in 1892 and Edward in 1894. Both are buried in the Beulah Cemetery. Two sisters, Nellie (Klipfel) Dutcher and Mildred (Klipfel) Walters moved to Powell, Wyoming. The three brothers, Charles T., Francis I, and Valentine (Vollie) remained in Beulah. August W. and Leah Thomas died in January, 1918; their deaths were only 16 days apart. Both are buried in Beulah Cemetery."

Biographical Sketch (1979):1448, p. 124-125. "August W. Klipfel came west from Missouri with a small group of people after the Civil War. While looking over the country he camped on upper South Creek. He chose Beulah as a home for his family, and in 1882 brought his wife, Leah, and three children, Edward, Mabel, and Charles from Missouri. They settled first in the Couzzens Springs area and later moved into the valley. Four more children were born in Beulah; Frances, Nellie, Mildred, and Valentine (Vollie). Charles, Francis and Vollie remained in Beulah. "

Biographical Sketch (1979):1448, p. 80. Augustus identified as one of the "principal sawmill men" in Beulah.

Biographical Sketch (1979):1448, p. 113-114. "Sawmilling remained a mainstay industry in the Beulah area. In addition to the early mills of Dotson & Leonard, Gus Krenzke, and the Patterson brothers, many of the other settlers opened sawmills. The cutting, milling and transporting of timber provided occupation and income for much of the area population. . . . A. W. Klipfel operated a mill up South Creek."

1848 Birth:20,3, v. 7, p. 610.,2077,3007 Birth year of 1848 estimated based on age (2 years) given in 1850 census enumeration. This is corroborated by the 1900 enumeration which lists birth date as March 1848. birth place of Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio assumed given his parents location there for the 1850 enumeration. Note that August gave his age as 16 (indicating an 1846 birth) when he entered military service on 17 August 1862 and that his death certificate indicates a birth date of 31 March 1846. This researcher assumes that the 1848 date is the accurate one, since it was the most contemporaneous with his early years and presumably furnished to the enumerator by his family. By the time of his enlistment in the military, this family had disintegrated and August fibbed about his age in his attempt to join the military.

1850 U.S. Census:20 August enumerated in the household of his father Francis Klipfel in the 6th Ward, Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio as a male, age 2, born in Ohio.

Companies I and K were organized at Camp Dennison, O., in September and October, 1864, to serve one year. On the 4th of September, 1862, the Regiment was ordered to Covington, Ky., to aid in repelling Rebel forces, and subsequently participated in several expeditions against General John Morgan. The Regiment reached Hartsville, Tenn., on the 28th day of November, and on the 7th of December had an engagement with the enemy which resulted in the loss of quite a number of men killed, wounded, and missing. From this time forward the Regiment did valuable service in guarding railroads, and in numerous expeditions against guerrillas and bushwackers in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama. It was mustered out of service June 29, 1865, in accordance with orders from the War Department."
