Biographical Sketch (1923):34, p. 575. "Horace Wheeler was born in Licking County, Ohio, where he grew to manhood and was married. He made his home there until the spring of 1851, when he came with his family over into Auglaize county and settled on a farm of 123 acres which he bought a mile and a half west of the river, in Logan township, a bit north of the old Whitefeather Indian village, where Buckland came to be laid out when the railroad came along more than 20 years later. It was on May 2, 1851, that Horace Wheeler established himself in this country. He was a good farmer and gradually added to his land holdings; until he became the owner of 310 acres in Logan township and was regarded as one of the substantial men of that community. On the place he lived for many years, or until his removal to a farm in the near vicinity of Spencerville, where he died, not long afterward, in 1909. He was twice married and by his union with Mary Trotter was the father of six children, of whom but two are now living, the subject of this sketch and his brother, Franklin Wheeler, the deceased children of the family having been Catharine, William, Cynthia, and Orlinda. By his second marriage, to Joanna Bitters, Horace Wheeler was the father of four children, Albert, Almira, Mary and Jesse. Reared on the home farm west of Buckland, James E. Wheeler grew to manhood there, receiving his schooling in the neighborhood schools, and remained on the home place until his marriage at the age of twenty-two, when he bought a tract of eighty-six acres in that same township and there established his home, continuing to farm that place."

There is no known blood relationship between John Sillin and Horris Wheeler. It is assumed that the newly married Horace and Mary Jane were helping the older couple with farm chores prior to relocating to Auglaize County. Once in Auglaize, Horace was living near John P. Sillin, son of John and Sarah, and it was at Horace's barn raising that William P. Morey was fatally injured. John P. Sillin was married to Hannah Patterson; Hannah sister's Rebecca was married to William P. Morey and Horace Wheeler was the nephew of William P. Morey.
1852 Death of Uncle William P. Morey:1192 Letter written 21 March 1852 by John P. Sillin describes the accidental death of William P. Morey after taking part in a barn raising for Horace Wheeler in Auglaize County, Ohio.
