Biographical Sketch (1909):660, v. 2, p. 137. "Josiah Scott was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania, in 1801. He married Samantha Morey, who was born December 1, 1807 in Rutland County, Vermont, and was a daughter of Abraham and Abigail (Stratton) Morey. Her death occurred March 5, 1887, and her grave was made at Charles City, Iowa. In the family of this worthy couple were seven children: Sanford, who died in March 1903; Joseph M.; Abigail; Mary Jane, who has also passed away; Eliza Roselia, who was born in 1839 and is married and lives in the state of Washington; Mary Roena, who was born in March 2, 1842, and was married in January, 1859, and now lives in Denver, Colorado; and Sidney A., who now resides on a farm two miles from Charles City, Iowa."

1826 Marriage:2461 Josiah Scott married Samantha Mowry on 31 August 1826 in Licking County, Ohio, performed by James Cunningham, VDM.

1830 U.S. Census:730 Samantha enumerated in the household of her husband Josiah Scott in the town of Utica, Washington Township, Licking County, Ohio as a female age 20 to 30; Samantha was about age 23. In addition to husband Josiah, two males under the age of 5 (sons Sanford and Joseph) and one male age 15 to 20 also resided in the household.

1834 Father's Estate Petition:1242 During the October 1834 term of the Licking County Common Pleas Court, a petition to the court in connection with settling the estate of Abraham Morey, who died intestate, lists his "widow named Abigail Morey who is entitled to dower in said land and the following children heirs at law: namely, Asa Morey; William Wheeler and Laura his wife, late Laura Morey; Arthur Briggs and Polly his wife, late Polly Morey; Elias Tracy and Nancy his wife, late Nancy Morey; Josiah Scott and Samantha his wife, late Samantha Morey; Stillman Morey; and Franklin Morey, the two last of whom are minors under the age of twenty one years, all of whom reside in said County."

1840 U.S. Census:2110 Samantha enumerated in the household of her husband Josiah Scott in Washington Township, Licking County, Ohio, as the one female, aged 30 to 40. Samantha was about age 33.

1840 Church Membership:2356 "On 28 August 1840, Samantha Scott applied for membership [in the Utica Presbyterian Church]. Her examination was sustained and request granted." Son Joseph was admitted to membership the previous day, 27 August 1840.

1840 Baptism:2356 "Sabbath Aug. 30, 1840, the ordinance of baptisms was administered to Samantha Scott. Also on the same date were baptised Sanford, Joseph, and Eliza Roselia — children of Josiah and Samantha Scott."

1860 U.S. Census:2437 Samantha enumerated in the household of her husband Josiah Scott in St. Charles Township, Floyd County, Iowa as a female, age 53, born in Vermont. Son Sydney and Josiah S. Symm, a male age 3 born in Wisconsin, were also residing in the household. Son Sanford,2438 his wife Pamelia, and five grandchildren (Samantha, Diantha, Mary, Abby, and James) resided in the immediately adjacent household.

1880 U.S. Census:2698 Samantha enumerated in the household of her son Sidney A. Scott in St. Charles Township, Floyd County, Iowa as a white, male, 33, married, farmer, born in Ohio, father in Pennsylvania, mother born in Vermont. Others enumerated were daughter-in-law Sarah, age 32, and grandchildren Jennie, age 12, and Joseph G., age 6.

1889 Obituary:2358 Scott—In This City, at the residence of her son, Mr. S.S. Scott, Friday, March 15, 1889, Samantha Scott, aged 81 years. Mrs. Scott was born Nov. 1807, at Rutland Vt. Her parents soon after removed to Genesco county, N.Y., and when she was twelve years of age came to Homer, Licking county, Ohio. In 1826 she married Josiah Scott, residing at Utica, Ohio. There her three sons and four daughters were born; only two of the latter grew up and survive her. In 1855 the family came to Charles City, living for years where the Illinois Central R.R. crosses the Chiciasaw road. Her husband died there in 1861. In early life she united with the Presbyterian Church and has for years been a consistent member of the Congregational church of this city. Her life has been a quiet one, beautifully illustrating the graces of a Christian character.
