Notes for Howard Abraham TAYLOR

Biographical Sketch (1923):34, v. 2, p. 521-522. "Howard A. Taylor, one of the best known farmers of Union township and the proprietor of a well improved farm along the creek just on the northwest edge of Uniopolis, was born in the neighboring county of Allen, but has been a resident of this county since he was eight years of age, a period of more than fifty-six years. Mr. Taylor was born on April 28, 1858, and is a son of Joseph and Adaline (Meyers) Taylor, who later became residents of Uniopolis."

Biographical Sketch (1923):34, v. 2, p. 521-522. "As noted above, Howard A. Taylor was eight years of age when he came to this county with his parents in 1866 and he grew to manhood at Uniopolis, receiving his schooling in the excellent schools of that pleasant village. From the days of his boyhood he has given his attention to the development of the home farm there on the edge of the village and after his marriage, at the age of twenty-four, bought sixty acres of the farm from his father and continued to make his home there. After awhile his father gave him an additional ‘forty’ and to this he later added by purchase an adjoining forty, so that he came to have an excellent farm of 140 acres, admirably situation and profitably cultivated. Some time ago he sold a portion of this land to his son Guy and this has left 118 acres. In addition to his general farming Mr. Taylor has ever given considerable attention to the raising of live stock and has done well. It was in October, 1882, that Howard A. Taylor was united in marriage to Josephine Focht, who was born in Union township, a member of one of the pioneer families there, daughter of Adam Focht, and to this union three children have been born, Bessie, Guy, and Mace, the latter of who married Walter Smith, who lives in Uniopolis, and has two children, Pauline and Atlee. Guy Taylor, now one of the trustees of Union township, is the proprietor of a farm of seventy-two acres and is carrying on his operations there in an up-to-date fashion. The Taylor's have a pleasant home on the outskirts of the village."

1936 Obituary:1171 Howard A. Taylor.
"I shall know the loved who have gone before.
And Joyfully sweet will the meeting be.
When over the river, the peaceful river,
The angel of death shall carry me."

The angel of death has carried from among us our friend and neighbor, Howard A. Taylor, who has spent practically his whole life among us. The deceased was born on April 28, 1858, in Allen County, the son of Joseph and Adaline (Meyers) Taylor. Mr. Taylor’s parents, who were farmers in Allen county, disposed of their lands and came to Uniopolis and opened a general store when he was eight years of age. Our deceased brother has spent the rest of his life among us, becoming a farmer in early manhood. In his chosen profession, he was regarded as a skilled, well-informed and very successful agriculturalist whose opinions and judgments were eagerly sought. In October 1882, Mr. Taylor was united in marriage with Josephine Focht. To this union were born three children: Bessie, deceased, Guy of Toledo; and Mrs. W. A. Smith of Uniopolis. His devoted and helpful wife died a few years ago.

Of the departed we his neighbors, friends, and acquaintances knew him as a friendly, cheerful, open hearted man. The virtues of integrity, fair-dealing, and high regard of truth were his very evident traits. He took great pride in keeping posted on latest developments in his profession and in keeping up with world happenings and events. Knowing him intimately and talking with him on many subjects, as the writer has done often, made one feel that he had gained something.

Our departed friend and neighbor leaves to mourn his passing, the children formerly mentioned, two grandchildren, a community of friends and neighbors all of whom are saddened by his passing from among them.
