1955 Obituary:563 George Wehner, Former Local Merchant, Dies. George John Wehner, age 86, 117 North Spruce Street, retired local merchant, died at 4:15 a.m., Sunday at his home after a six year illness with a complication of diseases. He has been seriously ill since Christmas. Mr. Wehner owned and operated Wehner’s Meat Market here for 38 years before his retirement from active business. For some years he owned two markets, one on the east and one on the west side of the city. After discontinuing the market in the Pauck building he continued to operate his market in East Spring street until his retirement, making many friends through his many years in business. He was a former member of the city council, a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church and the Holy Name Society. Mr. Wehner was born March 26, 1869 in Fryburg, the son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Gerstner Wehner, who died at an early age. Surviving him are his devoted wife, the former Lettie Wiss, who has cared for him during his illness. They were married June 5, 1895, and had looked forward to observing their 60th wedding anniversary this year. Two brothers and two sisters are deceased. There are a number of nieces and nephews and many friends surviving. Solemn requiem high mass will be held for Mr. Wehner at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Rosary Church with Monsignor John J. Brinker as celebrant, Rev. Raymond Zupkie, C.P.P.S., deacon and Rev. Leo Boeke, New Bremen, subdeacon. Burial will take place in Gethsemane Cemetery.
