Biographical Sketch (1938):2426, v. 1, p. 417. "John - As a young man he had much experience in the whale fishing industry in the South Sea Islands. He kept a 'record book and daguerreotype of all the whales caught on each four-year voyage. He went from San Francisco with a cargo of wheat from some of the South Sea Islands when he heard of gold mines being discovered in California, but could hardly get enough for it to pay for the sacks -- no mills to grind it. He fell in with his brother Moses and they both went to Oregon. John to Oregon City and Moses to Pendleton, Umatilla County. He married and raised a large family.' (Gilman Nathaniel Folsom.)"
