1903 Obituary:635,842, v. 2, p. 270. Obituary of A. T. Mertz. Archibald Thomas Mertz was born March 13, 1830 in Union county, Penn. He died at his late home in Wapakoneta Saturday morning, July 25th, 1903, being aged 73 years, 4 months, and 12 days. The early life of the deceased was spent in Pennsylvania. About 55 years ago his father settled in this county. On the 25th of Sept. 1851 he was married to Miss Susannah Baughman, who still lives to mourn the loss of a companion who has walked by her side for more than 52 years. To this happy union nine children were born. Estella Margaret and Agnes preceded their father to the other world. Sarah Rader, of Van Wert, O., Elizabeth Dobie, of Clay township, this county, John Franklin of Wapakoneta, Francina Lusk, of St. Johns, Archibald Henry, of Jackson Center, O., and Laura Mayhugh, of near St. Johns, live to mourn the loss of a kind and loving father. These dear ones are joined by many long time neighbors and friends in mourning the departure of one loved and respected by all who knew him.

For a few years of his early life the deceased was a blacksmith, when 46 years ago he moved into the woods northwest of St. Johns where he has since lived until 8 months ago when he moved to Wapakoneta, and where he has by industry developed one of the best farms in the county. He was trusted by his fellow citizens, as is evidenced by the fact that he has held during his life several offices, such as township clerk and trustee.

In his early childhood he was confirmed in the German Lutheran Church; while he did not maintain his membership in the church he was a church attendant, and before he died gave evidence of having accepted Christ as his savior and friend. We have a right to believe that he is in heaven today. Let us all learn that we know not the day of God's calling, but that we aught to be ready at any time to meet our Lord.

The funeral was held at St. Johns, Monday, July 27, and was attended by many old time neighbors and friends. J. C. Roberts was assisted by Revs. Worthington, Woodworth, and Brackney. Interment at St. Johns.
