Notes for Mary "Polly" MOREY

1798 Birth: Birth date of 17 May 1798 calculated based on age at death of 70 years, 9 months, 4 days on 1869 tombstone3059 in Frytown Cemetery, Washington Township, Johnson County, Iowa. The 1798 date is consistent with Mary "Polly"'s age as reported in the 18502416 census (52 years) and the 18602907 census (62 years). Birth place of Vermont was reported in both the 1850 and 1860 enumerations, which is also consistent with her parents Abraham and Abigail Morey enumeration in 18002406 in Rutland Township, Rutland County, Vermont.

1800 U.S. Census:148, p. 125.,2406 Mary "Polly" enumerated in the household of her father Abraham Morey in Rutland Township, Rutland County, Vermont as one of two females under the age of 10; Mary "Polly" was about age 2.

1810 U.S. Census: Parents Abraham Morey and Abigail Stratton not definitively located. Possible locations include Rutland and Addison counties in Vermont as well as Genesee and Clinton counties in New York.

1818 Marriage: The transcribed marriage records of Licking County, re-constructed in 1878 following two fires in the courthouse in Newark, Ohio, list the marriage of Elias Tracy and Polly Morey365 on 13 September 1818. The ceremony was performed by Alexander Holden, who dated the marriage return 19 October 1818. Elias Tracy is also, apparently correctly, listed as marrying Naomi Morey1514 on 6 November 1823. The 1834 petition to settle the estate1242 of Abraham Morey clearly identifies "Arthur Briggs and Polly his wife, late Polly Morey" and "Elias Tracy and Nancy his wife, late Nancy Morey."

1820 U.S. Census (Licking County, Ohio):2902 Mary "Polly" enumerated in the household of her husband Arthur Briggs in Bennington Township, County, Ohio as a female, age 16 to 26. Polly was about age 22. In addition to Arthur and Polly, a daughter under the age of 10 also resided in the household. Brother-in-law William Wheeler and wife Laura Morey were enumerated nearby; father Abraham Morey enumerated on the same page. These families were all located in Burlington Township, Licking County, Ohio in the 1830 enumeration.

1830 U.S. Census:2375 Mary "Polly" enumerated in the household of her husband Arthur Briggs in Burlington Township, Licking County, Ohio as a female age 30 to 40; she was about age 32. The household included two male and two female children.
