Notes for Michael MOSSER

Biographical Sketch (1932):1372, p. 201. "Michael Musser was the seventh child of Samuel and Catharine Musser (Mosser). He was born march 16, 1805. According to the tradition of the family, he was born in Pennsylvania, but that is likely in error, as his father settled in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, in 1803, and probably moved his family there at that time. Michael’s brother Abraham was born in 1806 in that county. Mary 31, 1827 Michael married Comfort Cordrey at Bolivar, Tuscarawas County, Ohio, where Michael, according to his son William, had grown to manhood in the home of a John Hines, with whom he went to live upon the death of his father Samuel Mosser in 1811. Comfort Cordrey was born July 10, 1809, and was likely the daughter of Thomas Cordrey who purchased the N. E. Section of Lot 19 in Lawrence Township,1372, p. 201. As his authority, Farley cites Zanesville Military Land Records, v. 1. July 22, 1814.

Michael worked for several years on the aqueducts and other works of the Ohio Canal that was constructed parallel to the Tuscarawas River, once called the Muskingum. In 1840 he was living at New Cumberland, Warren Township, Tuscarawas County. His family at that time consisted of three boys and four girls.

Michael moved to Bartholomew County, Indiana, where he was for many years a bookkeeper for a Mooney’s Tanning and Leather Company near Taylorsville. He is said to have recruited in this county a company for service in the Civil War. He died Jan. 30, 1885."
