1919 Obituary:986 S. V. Bitler. S. V. Bitler, the subject of this sketch, was born at St. Johns, Auglaise [sic] County, Ohio, Feb. 16, 1841, and died at his late home in Madison, Kansas, Jan. 31, 1919.
His early life was spent in mercantile pursuits, and in the fall of 1870 he came to Kansas and located on the farm ten miles west of Madison, where he engaged extensively in the stock business. For the past 20 years he has lived in the vicinity of Madison.
He was married to Mary E. Irwin in 1861, and to this union were born eight children, all of whom survive him The daughters are Mrs. Estelle Tower, Mrs. Felle Leonard, Mrs. Ica Minor, Mrs. May McCormick, Mrs. Maud Smith, and Mrs. Adine Gregory. The two sons are Daniel and Gilbert Bitler of Madison. All the children except Mrs. May McCormick of Los Angeles, California, were present at the funeral. He is also survived by two stepdaughters, 22 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Bitler died in 1887, and in 1896 he was married to Mrs. Annie Neville, who died in 1910. He was always interested in the upbuilding of his community and ready to lend a helping hand to the unfortunate. He was a member of the Christian Church and of the I.O.O.F. Lodge for over fifty years. The funeral services were held at the home in Madison Sunday by Rev. D. Y. Donaldson of Emporia. Interment was made in the Olpe Cemetery.
