1920 Obituary:634,842, v. 2, p. 271. Union Township Resident Dead. Ms. Susanna Mertz, a venerable resident of Union Township passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. H. Mayhue, eight miles east of here, this morning, Saturday, July 31, 1920, at 8 o'clock. Death was due to the infirmities of old age. The venerable lady had attained the age of eighty-six years, nine months, and eighteen days.
Mrs. Mertz lived to see her posterity to the fourth generation, for surviving her death are six children, fourteen grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. The children are: Mrs. Sarah Rader, Convoy; Mrs. Alfred Dobie, Clay township; Frank Mertz, Wapakoneta; Mrs. E. S. Lusk, Wapakoneta; Mrs. J. H. Mayhue, Union township; A. H. Mertz, Union township.
The deceased was born September 13, 1833, in Sandusky county, Ohio, the daughter of Henry and Mary Baughman. By her death the family history of Mr. and Mrs. Baughman and their thirteen children is ended. Mrs. Mertz removed to this county with her parents at the age of three years, locating in Clay township. On September 25, 1851, she was united in marriage to A. T. Mertz, who preceded her in death seventeen years ago. Mrs. Mertz for eighteen years was a resident of Wapakoneta, and went to reside with Mrs. Mayhue about two years ago.
Mrs. Mertz was a faithful member of the St. Johns Christian Church for forty-four years. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, August 2, from the St. Johns M. E. church, 2 pm, Rev. Frisbie officiating. Internment at St. Johns cemetery.
