Notes for George Michael PETER

Biographical Sketch (1973):1463, p. 2-3. "Baptism records show the christening on 14 March 1752 of George Michael Peter. There is also record of baptisms, 1 June 1754 of daughter Anna Christina and of son Daniel on 21 June 1761. All were baptized by Rev. Jacob Lischy, a traveling missionary of York County, whose records were translated from German. . . .

George Michael and Catherine had eleven children born between 1778 and 1801. They were Elizabeth, Henry, John, Michael, George, David, Emanuel, Daniel, Catherine, Lydia, Peter, and Magdalena. These birth appear in the translated copy of records of the Christ Lutheran Church of York.

George Michael Peter served in the Revolutionary War as a private in Captain Godfrey Frey’s Company, 3rd Battalion, York County Militia. Within the period 1777-1780, he was fined 30 pounds for non-performance of military duty. Fines of this nature were commonplace during the Revolutionary War since soldiers serving near home would return there for such purposes as planting or gathering of crops. Record of his military service is in Prowell, History of York County1452, v. 1, p. 286. and in Pennsylvania Archives, Series 3, v. 23, p. 520; Series ?, v. 7, p. 112; and Series 6, v. 2, p. 488. He is listed in the DAR Patriot Index, 1966.

George Michael was a party to a number of land transactions between 1783 and 1825 as shown by deeds and mortgages recorded in York County. . . .

George Michael Peter died at age 75, 7 June 1825. Obituary accounts in the 14 June 1825 issues of the York Recorder and the York Gazette newspapers report that he was a "respectable inhabitant of York Township" and that he was one of three survivors of his Revolutionary War Company. His will dated 20 November 1822 was probated 28 October 1825. His son, George of Codorus Township, York County, was administrator. The will bequeathed the estate to ten children; one child John Henry, born 1780, was apparently dead. His wife Catherine Mosser Peter had according to the York Gazette issue of 9 April 1818, previously died 1 April 1818, at age 62.

Most records refer to George Michael Peter as a farmer. However, he is referred to as "yeoman" in a 1791 land sale record. This same account identified his wife as Catherina Elizabeth."

1825 Death Mention:1328 "Died on Tuesday last, Mr. George Michael Peter, aged 75 years, a respectable inhabitant of York township."

1825 Death Mention:1672 "Died on Tuesday last, near this place, Mr. George Michael Peter, aged 75 years. Mr. Peter bore a part in the war for independence -- having been a member of Capt. Henry Miller's company, which marched from this borough in the spring of '75, and made the campaign of that year. Of the members of that company, two, only, now survive -- namely George Overdear, and Daniel Barnitz, of Hanover."
